Hypoglycaemia

Hypoglycaemia means LOW blood sugar/glucose. this word is oftened shortened to 'hypo'. If ypur blood sugar level falls below 4.0mmol/l 6you are likely to feel 'hypo'. 'Hypos' may happen if meals are delayed or missed or after lots of exercise. the body responds to 'hypos' with a number of warning signs, whuch may be different in different in different children. you will learn to recognise these early warning signs so that you will be able to act quickly to treat them.

Signs of Hypoglycaemia

If you are 'hypo' you may feel some of the following symptoms; hungry, sweaty, faint, cold, sick or cross. You may also have a headache,funny visions or pins and needles. Other people may notice that you look pale or dazed with large pupils and are weepy or irratible.

Hypos may be divided into three groups:-

Mild - you may feel shaky,sweaty, dizzy etc., you recognise the symptoms and can correct the hypo yourself by taking glucose/ sugar. You should tell an adult/parent when this happens.

Moderate - you may be confused and unable to help yourself. Another person will need to give you the sugar that you need.You should always tell an adult when this happens to you.

Severe - you lose consciousness and are unable to swallow any food or drink. you may even have a type of seizure. if this happens you will be given a special injection by an adult (such as your parent) who knows how to do this.

The ealier the signs of a 'hypo' are recognise the easier it is to put right. If in doubt check your blood sugar level.

What to do if you're blood sugars are high?

At school on thursday my blood sugars were too high ( 28.6) and there fore i had to come home from school. I did a test (after being sick) then i did enough insulin to bring it down. Unfortunatley, becuase it was not coming down, my mum had to phone the doctors and ask what to do. My Nurse told me to drink plenty of water, to keep checking my blood sugars and to regulaly take doses of insulin to bring my blood sugar level down.. By lunchtime i had started to feel better. I did anther test and it was alot lower than what it was ealier. It was... 12.4!
I was really happy about that and i would like to say thanks to my nurse and my mum, and the school (!), for their help.

However the same happened on friday. I was sick, my figures were high, i came home from school, did some insulin,then i started to feel a lot better.

What a week!

The Flower festival

It is very quite in the house. Everyone else is at the flower festival but i am here becuase i was starting to feel a bit sick. i think I may have eaten too many cakes!!!!
I rode home on my brothers bike and decided to do a blood test to see exactly how high I actually was!

Yeh, so the flower festival was for raising money for our church, seeing as it is extremely old now. My Mum made and arranged all the flowers and, as you may have guessed, there were lots of cakes and drinks!

The Clinic

Every 6 months I have to go to the doctors to check my blood results are becoming under control, whether i have been recording when I do my injections and to solve any problems that i may have.
Yesterday I was told that my next appointment is on the 29th September at 4:20pm. We will be discussing the pump and its' advantages and disadvantages because going to the clinic means one step closer to getting one, hopefully!!

Hi, this is my second diary entry. This morning i woke up really late and so i was starting to go low. My blood result was 4.8, so my litle sister and I went downstairs for breakfast. I had Marmite on toast!!!!!!! :)

Diabetes UK

Diabetes UK is a charity designed to help those with diabetes. Every week fundraisers donate millions of pounds to the charity. This money has helped to improve the lives of those living with the disease e.g money has allowed scientists to inprove, produce and sell lots of pumps!!!

The charity has a website which enables you to look up detailed information on diabetes and also gives monthly updates on the charity happenings in a newsletter. This is emailed to anyone who wants it. However you do have to sign up to be able to acsess the newsletter. The website has diabetic recipes, info on how you became diabetic, and lots of charity updates.

Steve Redgrave is diabetic!!!

For those of you who don't know. He is a british gold medalist rower. He has won 5 gold medals and has lately been fundraising for Sport relief.

Steve has type two diabetes but he copes well. He is very fit and he uses the pump to be able to do everything that he wants to do. Recently Steve and a crew of cyclists, a photographer (my Mum) and lots of other helpers went on a cycle Race Across America (RAAM). Here is the link to the website on the RAAM...

Olympia Horse Show

One of my hobbies is horse riding and therefore I adore horses and ponies. Olympia horse show is an eventful and enjoyable occasion. It is situated in London and is usually on around Christmas. I have been to the show with my uncle for the last two years and have found it truly amazing. I have seen 8 horses being rode at the same time, ponies jumping through and over fire and some amazing showjumping finals!

Hey, Charlie here! Welcome to my blog about my groovy life coping with diabetes. Thing is, its really not bad, I've gotten used having to inject myself every morning and every evening, and at lunch. However, for the last year I have been desperately wanting the pump. Fortunately my doctor says that I will be getting one soon as my blood results are becoming under control and level. I'm really looking forward to that day because then it will be NO MORE INJECTIONS!!!!!!! YAY :)

This morning I woke up feeling really rubbish. I ended up being sick but I started to feel better after that. My Mum told me that my blood levels had probably gone low during the night and had bounced high. My morning result was 19.3, pretty damn high!!!! :)
